PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fuel assembly which enhances neutron economy, utilizes nuclear rector fuel effectively, and forms a reactor core suitable for both of a uranium fuel and a MOX fuel, along with enhancing profitability by increasing the degree of freedom of space distribution in the reactor core of a moderator such as water or the like in the reactor core. SOLUTION: By forming planar short side portions in the corner portions of a channel box 43 in the fuel assembly for boiling water reactor composed by covering the aggregate with the channel box 43, after removing fuel rods being in the corner portions of the fuel aggregate, the cross section of the channel box is made to be a quasi-octagon. The short side portions are provided with solid moderator fitting portions 45a, 45b for fitting solid moderator fitting portions 45a, 45b, for fitting solid moderators 46a, 46b, 46c.
