Two magnetic field Hall-IC linear sensors (1,2) are arranged so that one is closer to a moving magnet (3) than the other with a gap (6) between them. The distance to be measured corresponds to the distance (S) between the first sensor and the pole face (5). This is derived from the following algorithm: - S = VOUTHALL-IC1/VOUTHALL-IC2-VOUTHALL-IC1 .'HALL-IC1/HALL-IC2 where :- VOUTHALL-IC1 = output of HALL-IC(1) VOUTHAL-IC2 = output of HALL-IC(2) 'HALL-IC1/HALL-IC2 = gap between sensors
