PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a chlorothiophosphate of general formula (3) (wherein, R is a 1-4C lower alkyl) in an industrially advantageous way with seldom causing the decomposition of the phosphorus compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing the chlorothiophosphate comprises the step (I) of reacting phosphorus sulfochloride with a lower alcohol of general formula (1): ROH to obtain a reaction liquid containing a dichlorothiophosphate of general formula (2) and unreacted phosphorus sulfochloride and the step (II) of subjecting the same lower alcohol of general formula (1) to the reaction liquid obtained in the step (I) in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide aqueous solution to produce the objective chlorothiophosphate; wherein the conversion of the phosphorus sulfochloride in the step (I) is brought to 20-98%.
