PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide sulfo group-containing polyester particles which are white and, in addition, have good color tone and water resistance when formed into a coating film, and an aqueous solution of the polyester having good storage stability. SOLUTION: The sulfo group-containing polyester particles are obtained by ion-exchanging the sulfonic acid metal salt group of a sulfonic acid metal salt group-containing polyester for a sulfo group with the use of a mineral acid in an aqueous medium to deposit free sulfo group-containing polyester particles, and then separating the particles, and when the polyester particles are used as an aqueous solution, the particles are further neutralized with ammonia.
