PURPOSE: A color cathode ray tube is provided to achieve improved Moire characteristics by making the vertical pitch change of the shadow mask large. CONSTITUTION: A color cathode ray tube comprises a panel having an inner surface on which a phosphor screen is formed; a funnel connected to the panel; an electron gun mounted in a neck portion of the funnel and which emits electron beams toward the phosphor screen; a shadow mask(3) spaced apart from the phosphor screen of the panel; and a frame for fixing and supporting the shadow mask. The shadow mask includes an effective surface having a plurality of slots(12) and an ineffective area surrounding the effective surface. The vertical pitch between the slots satisfies the formulas 0.04<(absolute value)(PVo-PVc)/PVo<0.1, 0.04<(absolute value)(PVo-PVe)/PVo<0.1, and 0.04<(absolute value)(PVo-PVt/PVo)<0.1, wherein PVo is the vertical pitch between slots of the center, PVc is the vertical pitch between slots of the end of the diagonal axis, PVe is the vertical pitch between slots of the end of the horizontal axis, and PVt is the vertical pitch between slots of the end of the vertical axis.
