QUARTZ-BASED OPTICAL FIBER AND ITS MANUFACTURING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quartz-based optical fiber which has high reliability against the rupture of an optical fiber and a superior fatigue characteristic.

SOLUTION: The maximum value (P) of axial residual stress in optical fiber section of a quartz-based optical fiber used for a land optical fiber cable is determined to be -4×10-1(GPa)≤P≤4×10-1(GPa). The maximum value (P) of axial residual stress in optical fiber section of a quartz-based optical fiber used for a submarine optical fiber cable is determined to be -2×10-1(GPa)≤P≤2×10-1(GPa). The maximum value (P) of axial residual stress in the glass outermost layer of an optical fiber is determined to be -2.5×10-3(GPa)≤P≤1.3×10-2(GPa).
