The invention relates to a generator for determining electrical, mechanical and/or thermal variables of a generator, especially for a motor vehicle electrical system. The electrical performance of the generator, especially the power current (I<SB>G</SB>) and the actual generator capacity (P<SB>G</SB>), can be analysed in a particularly simple manner by means of a unit (1) which determines the electrical performance of the generator in all operating conditions thereof, wherein at least one first group and one second group of warm or cold characteristics (5a,5b,6) are respectively stored for various generator voltages (U<SB>G1</SB>,U<SB>G2</SB>), wherefrom, the unit (1) determines the actual generator power current (I<SB>G</SB>) by taking into account an actual generator temperature (T<SB>G</SB>) and a maximum generator temperature (T<sb>Gmax</sb>) by linear interpolation between the characteristics (5a,5b,6).
