PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous body consisting of silicon oxide which has high mechanical strengths, and is useful for a filter, a catalytic carrier, an absorption material, an insulating material, a sound absorbing body, a color pencil lead, a cosmetic pencil lead or the like, and a method of producing a porous body consisting of silicon oxide by which a porous body consisting of silicon oxide with a prescribed shape can easily be produced. SOLUTION: The porous body consisting of silicon oxide can be obtained by subjecting a composition at least containing 10 wt.% silicone rubber to firing treatment. As the silicone rubber to be used, e.g. at least one kind selected from heat curing type silicone rubber and liquid silicone rubber can be cited. In its production method, a composition at least containing 10 wt.% silicone rubber is molded so as to be made into a prescribed shape, and after that, the molding is fired at 300 to 1,400°C in an oxidizing atmosphere and/or a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
