PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the increase in a detection interval produced when two units are non-linearly connected to each other. SOLUTION: A light projecting device E comprises light projecting units 2 to 5 and a light projecting relay member 6 installed at the corner part of a detection area. The light projecting relay member 6 is connected to the light projecting unit 3 through a connector part 6d and connected to the light projecting unit 4 through a connector part 6c, the light projecting units 3 and 4 are connected to each other so as to form a generally right angle (specified angle) and electrically connected to each other and, at the same time, a light projecting window part 3b, an auxiliary light projecting window part 6a, and a light projecting window part 4a are positioned nearly on a straight line at intervals of LE. Light receiving devices are also formed in a generally same structure as the light projecting devices. When the light projecting devices 3 and 4 are connected to each other and the light receiving units are connected to each other non-linearly at right angle, light projecting and light receiving intervals can be reduced by the light projecting relay member 6 and a light receiving relay member.
