PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a porous material having high-strength open pores of uniform pore-size distribution by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis process using a high-strength, high-density compact. SOLUTION: A plurality of kinds of raw-material powder capable of forming intermetallic compounds or ceramics by exothermic reaction are used. After molding, self-propagating high-temperature synthetic reaction is induced to prepare a compound. The compound is pulverized. The plurality of kinds of the raw-material powder are mixed with the resultant compound powder so that a prescribed composition is reached. Other metal powder or ceramic powder is properly added. After compaction the self-propagating high-temperature synthetic reaction is carried out. By this method, the porous material with open pores can be manufactured. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
