PURPOSE: A device and method for extracting a moving picture shape descriptor is provided to use a still image shape descriptor and a moving picture shape descriptor as index information by extracting the still image shape descriptor from image objects included in a moving picture and extracting the moving picture shape descriptor which indicates statistical characteristic from the extracted shape descriptors. CONSTITUTION: If a moving picture(200) is inputted in a moving picture divider(210), the moving picture divider(210) executes a time slicing of the inputted moving picture(200). The moving picture(200) is inputted in a shape extractor(231). The shape extractor(231) extracts a shape information moving picture(232) corresponded to one image object. Shape information of each still image of the shape information moving picture(232) is inputted to a shape vector descriptor extractor(233) which outputs a shape descriptor vector sequence(234). The shape descriptor vector sequence(234) is inputted to a statistical shape descriptor vector extractor(235). The statistical shape descriptor vector extractor(235) outputs a moving picture shape descriptor(240) using numerical formulae corresponded to an average shape descriptor, a variance shape descriptor, a standard deviation shape descriptor, and a difference shape descriptor. The moving picture shape descriptor(240) is stored in a moving picture meta data DB.
