PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for starting from a submerged caisson, allowing a shield machine to easily start from the submerged caisson. SOLUTION: In this starting method for starting the shield machine from the submerged caisson 10 submerged to the sea bottom SB and accommodating the shield machine 13, a slide type cut-off gate plate 36 is provided in a starting port 15 of the submerged caisson 10, and at the time of starting the shield machine 13, the pressure inside the caisson 10 of the cut-of gate plate 36 is made substantially equal to the sea water pressure outside thereof, and then the cut-off gate plate 36 is slid to open the starting port 15.
