PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold clamping device for preventing falling and inclination of a movable die plate during a slight opening, position holding or compression process for injection compression molding, in an injection compression molding machine having a mold opening and closing means due to an electromotive servo motor and a ball screw device and a mold clamping means due to a hydraulic cylinder, and a control method therefor. SOLUTION: The flow rate of hydraulic oil is controlled by a hydraulic servo valve so that the detection value of the relative position detection sensor of a fixed die plate and each tie bar is allowed to coincide with the position of a movable die plate converted from the number of rotations of the ball screw of a movable die plate moving means during the slight opening and holding process of the movable die plate to operate a mold clamping cylinder to keep the movable die plate parallelly. The speed and stop position of the ball screw can be controlled in the slight opening and holding process of the movable die plate with high accuracy and no bending load acts on the ball screw and, since the ram of the mold clamping cylinder bears slight opening moving load, the load applied to the ball screw is reduced to extend the life of the ball screw.
