The vehicle has a bonnet (1) and a covered bumper unit with cross strut connected to the vehicle chassis. The bumper is moved by a sensor-activated lifting device (5) from a rest position into a raised collision position. At least some parts of the bumper unit are moved in direction of travel by a sensor-activated sliding unit. This is associated with a cross flange of the bumper unit located below the cross strut. The slide unit has a pneumatic muscle, which is positioned at right angles to the direction of travel, and has two ends connected to cross bar and vehicle chassis via toggle lever arrangements.
