Instrument (700) which is to be introduced into the human pharynx and comprises a basic element (702) with a curved insertion part having an insertion end which can be introduced into an area between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx. A spacer (703) is provided and is active between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx. The spacer (703) comprises a curved follower part. The follower part can match the contour of the tongue. The basic element (702) and the spacer (703), in an introduction position, can be introduced into an area between the tongue and the rear side of the pharynx. The basic element (702) and the spacer (703), after introduction, can be displaced away from one another in relative terms into a holding-open position.
