PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape recording and reproducing device utilizing a helical scan method, in which data are recorded on a plurality of data blocks with high density and surely reproducible by a pair of magnetic recording heads or magnetic reproducing heads. SOLUTION: By the 1st recording head WH1 and the 2nd recording head WH2, tracking signals S preliminarily being written onto servo tracks ST1-ST3 along the running direction of the magnetic tape MT are read with a magnetic gap G(T). By that the displacement of a 1st piezoelectric element is controlled on the basis of the tracking signal, the relative position for the 1st recording head WH1 and the 2nd recording head WH2 with respect to a rotary cylinder 2 is controlled, and the positions of the data blocks DB1, DB2, DB3 in the pitch direction, whereon the data are to be recorded, are accurately controlled by following up with the tracking signal.
