PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin which is useful as a dispersion stabilizer for emulsion polymerization, has excellent low temperature storage stability, and can give emulsions for forming coating films having excellent water resistance. SOLUTION: This polyvinyl alcohol-based resin is characterized by having a saponification degree of≥90 mol.%,≥4C long chain alkyl groups at terminals, and a mol.wt. distribution of 2.5 to 3.5.
