<p>PURPOSE: A system for producing a coherent gas jet which can effectively employ liquid fuel to generate the requisite flame shroud is provided. CONSTITUTION: The coherent jet lance apparatus comprises a lance(3) having a lance face(6) and having at least one nozzle(2) having an opening at the lance face; a recession(10) on the lance face(6) around the nozzle opening(s)(4); means for providing liquid fuel(11) into the recession, and means for providing motive gas(13) into the recession to atomize liquid fuel within the recession; and means for passing oxidant from the lance positioned radially outward of the recession, wherein the recession is completely around the nozzle opening(s), wherein the recession has a depth within the range of from 0.25 to 2.0 inches, wherein the motive gas provision means provides the motive gas into the recession at an angle of up to 60 degrees with respect to a normal to the bottom of the recession, wherein the lance apparatus further comprises an extension(8) extending from the lance face and positioned on the lance radially outward of the recession, and wherein the means for providing liquid fuel into the recession provides the liquid fuel into the recession(10) in a substantially parallel direction with the lance face.</p> |
