PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which uses a contact electrifier as an electrifier for an image carrier and copes with wide sheets of paper without drastically increasing the sizes of the image carrier and contact electrifying member and without shortening the life of an image carrier, and to provide a process cartridge. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus having the image carrier 1 and an image forming unit including the electrifiers for electrifying the image carrier layer surface of the image carrier, the electrifiers has a first electrifier 2 and a second electrifier 3. The first electrifier 2 electrifies the layer surface by externally applying a voltage to the contact electrifying member disposed in contact with the image carrier 1.
