Support comprises: surface (22) for feeding reactants to electrode of electrochemical functional unit and for removing reaction products from electrode; matrix structure (48) arranged in partial region (42) consisting of surface for the functional unit; and secondary structure (50) made from electrically conducting structure. Matrix structure forms the supporting structure for the functional unit. An Independent claim is also included for a high temperature fuel cell comprising an electrochemical functional unit with an anode, an oxide ceramic electrolyte and a cathode. Preferred Features: The material for the matrix structure has a thermal expansion coefficient which adapts to the electrolyte of the functional unit when the fuel cell is in operation. The material of the matrix structure is made from chromium or aluminum.
