A surface of an electrolytically dissolvable material, e.g. , an electrolytically dissolvable metal (402), is smoothed by two-step electrochemical process wherein the surface to be smoothed (402) and a counterelectrode (408) are contacted with an electrolyte and an electric current is passed between the substrate (402) and the counterelectrode (408), with the substrate (402) as the anode. In a first step relatively large asperities (404) on the substrate (402) are reduced in height by maintaining a macroprofile regime by using a pulsed electric current with short pulses. In a second step, small asperities (406) and the remainder of the larger asperities (404) are reduced or removed by maintaining a microprofile regime by using a pulsed current having longer pulses or a direct current.
|
