The access control has a learning phase when a user creates a secret number code which is stored in an electronic memory. To gain access the user then presents the electronic memory which is read to extract the secret code. The learning stage uses a display (5) containing a number of patterns (3) arranged in a matrix. The user selects a graphic code to generate the secret number.
