PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain performance equal to or better than that of a cathode-ray tube-employing display in colorization and motion picture reproduction by three- color back light by increasing the speed of response. SOLUTION: In a method for driving a nematic liquid crystal for visually recognizing a prescribed picture by displaying the prescribed picture in continuous frame unit, in each frame of continuous frames, a first voltage V1 or V0 corresponding to a picture data is applied between the two electrodes sandwiching the nematic liquid crystal. A second voltage V0 having no relation to the picture data is then applied between the two electrodes to shorten a frame period.
