PURPOSE: To provide a spindle device offering simple construction permitting a reduction in power loss of a spindle and in output power of a motor and giving cooling effect thereto as well. CONSTITUTION: The spindle device for a machine tool for rotatably supporting the spindle in a housing via bearings 3a, 3b, 4 comprises a helium circulation system for introducing helium having smaller density and resistance to a fluid than air from a helium supply port 28 to a gap in the outer periphery of the spindle in the housing 2 and discharging it from a helium discharge port 29 to the outside, whereby the spindle 5 is rotated under a helium atmosphere.
