PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively utilize both illumination light and external light as light contributing of a display screen when observed by an observer. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with an illuminator to make light irradiate a lower substrate from the exterior surface side and a reflection layer 9 disposed on the lower side of the illuminator reflecting the illumination light L1 from the illuminator to a direction H nearly normal to the substrate surface and simultaneously reflecting the external light L2 made incident from the exterior surface side of an upper substrate to a direction H nearly normal to the substrate surface.
