PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for initializing an equalizer in an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) receiver, which includes a step for generating a desired equalizer tap setting on the basis of adaptive algorithm. SOLUTION: The inialization of the adaptive algorithm corresponds to an approximate inverse of a channel estimate, and the desired tap setting corresponds to an ideal inverse of the channel estimate. In an alternative embodiment, the method includes the steps of: generating the channel estimate (220); generating equalizer tap setting (260) on the basis of the complex conjugate (250) of the estimate value and a quantized magnitude squared (240) of the estimate; and repeatedly generating subsequent tap setting until an error falls within limits.
