In systems for setting up connections in networks from ingress nodes to egress nodes by exchanging set-up messages comprising ingress codes, egress codes and quality codes (delays, hopcounts, packetlosses, available bandwidths), much time is lost when failures occur during the setting up. By introducing set-up generators for generating several set-up messages independently from any receival of response messages and defining the connection to be set up via different paths (via different intermediate nodes), in parallel, several paths are being (tried to) set up for the same connection. By introducing a comparator for comparing quality codes and a selector for selecting a path in dependence of a comparison result, the best path can be selected, resulting in a very efficient network. Said ingress/egress nodes are ingress/egress Label Switched Routers situated in leaf areas coupled via backbone areas, with said intermediate nodes being head-end/tail-end Area Border Routers.

|
