PURPOSE: A digital video storage having a smart card reader and a method for authenticating a user of the same are provided to simplify an authentication process and remove a danger of a loss and a surreptitious use of a user identification number and a password by enabling a user not to input identification number and a password directly. CONSTITUTION: If a smart card including user information is inserted into a card reader(S10), the card reader recognizes the stored information and transmits the information to a RAM(S15). The transmitted card information is authenticated according as a card information decoding and authenticating program is executed by a control signal of a CPU(S20). If the inputted card is authenticated, the decoded card information and an authenticated time are stored in a storage(S25), and a grade of an authenticated user and available functions are displayed. If the user selects a function out of the displayed available functions(S35), it is checked whether the selected function is corresponded to the user grade in the decoded card information(S40). If the selected function is corresponded to the user grade, a control signal is output to the CPU for executing the corresponding function, the corresponding function is executed, and use details are stored in the storage(S45). If an input signal with respect to the corresponding function does not exist, a log-out is executed(S50), and the inserted card is discharged(S55).
