PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a whole text retrieving device which shortens the response time of a register and erasure processing at the side of a user. SOLUTION: A register processing means 3 divides document data into partial character strings through the use of a text dividing means 6 and performs register processing with respect to a document data storage part 7 and a registering small scale text index storage part 9. An erasure processing means 4 reads document data from the document data storage part 7 based on an inputted document identifier, divides document data into the partial character strings through the use of the dividing means 6, erases the index in the case of the index of the registering small scale text index storage part 9, records the index in an erasing small scale text index storage part 10 in the other case and, then, performs the erasure processing. A retrieval processing means 5 divides a retrieval character string into the partial character strings by using the dividing means 6 based on an input retrieval condition and outputs the retrieval result of the storage part 10 as a deduction retrieval result from the retrieval results of a retrieving large scale text index storage part 8 and the storage part 9. A merge means 11 transfers data among the respective storage parts 8, 9 and 10.
