R1 and R2 = H, 1-6C alkyl, aralkyl, OH, hydroxyalkyl, dihydroxyalkyl, alkoxy, alkoxy alkyl, amino and aminoalkyl (amino may be substituted by one or two alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups); Ra and Rb = 1-6C alkylene; X1, X2, and X3 = OH, 1-6C alkoxy, aryloxy, alkyl, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, halogen, alkylcarbonyloxy, or azido; X4 = methylidene or -Rc-X1-; and Rc = a bond or methylene. The aryl groups may be phenyl or naphthyl. Independent claims are also included for: (1) A pharmaceutical composition for the inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK-3), comprising (I); and (2) Preparation of (I).
