A silver-oxide-containing glass is provided with a silver coating by exposing said glass to electromagnetic radiation in the presence of water vapour to cause the formation of the silver coating on the exposed surface of the glass. The radiation may be in the form of light or heat, althrough ultra violet radiation produces the coating more rapidly; it is stated that formation of the coating also takes place in darkness although requiring a long time. The glass may be provided with an electroconductive coating having a desired configuration, i.e. a coating with highly conductive and highly resistant regions, by masking the regions desired to be highly resistant or by subjecting the glass to a pattern of radiation having the configuration desired for the conductive coating, e.g. by projecting a source of light through a photographic negative having the said configuration. The process may be used to form mirrors, printed circuits or devices to be used in warning signals, time-delay switches and detonators for fuses and explosives; these devices comprise a silver-oxide-containing glass base provided with a pair of spaced electrodes which lead to an electrical circuit, the arrangement being placed in a water-vapour environment which causes the formation of a silver coating, after a desired time, thus completing the electrical circuit. Specification 780,304 [Group XXIII] is referred to.
