PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify the phase of water or fat in a complex-number-formatted image which is imaged by utilizing a magnetic resonance. SOLUTION: The complex-number-formatted image G1 is divided into a large number of sections. If the phase of water or fat can be identified by the phase histogram of one section Sc, the phase of water or fat is obtained from the phase histogram of the section. If the identification is not possible, the phase histogram of a section in a specified range C1 in the vicinity is added, and if the phase of water or fat can be identified by the added phase histogram, the phase of water or fat is obtained from the added phase histogram. If the identification is not possible, the same process is repeated while expanding the specified range. Since the area by which the phase histogram is obtained is automatically changed, the phases of water and fat can be preferably identified.
