Process for sharpening knife blades, razor blades or scalpels comprises placing the blade or scalpel in an aqueous solution of sodium and/or potassium bisulfate for a predetermined amount of time; and rinsing thoroughly with water. Preferred Features: A 1-3% (preferably 2%) solution of sodium and/or potassium bisulfate is used. The bisulfate contains water bound in a mole ratio of up to 1:10 (preferably 1:1). The solution additionally contains up to 2 wt.% sodium chloride or up to 5 wt.% sodium hydrogen phosphate or up to 0.05 wt.% potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide.
