The present invention is in the technological field of imaging and more specifically image analysis. The object of the present invention is to provide a method which restores an image or a series of images (3) automatically by eliminating straight or virtually straight scratches (31, 32, 33) in said images. The invention method eliminates scratches in still or animated digital images by using the residual image information in the altered areas of said images. This invention method is used more particularly in the field of the restoration of films and television documents and for retouching and restoring photographic images.
