The method uses two machining tools, acting on upper and lower surface of the metal band at relatively offset points. The metal band (5) is deflected through approx. 180 deg between the two working stations (1,2). In both stations, the machining tool (3,a) is located below the metal band. The machining appliance has a deflector unit (8) to alter the advance direction (6,7) of the band, and counter pressure pads (4,a), acting with the tool in front of and behind the deflector unit.
