PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decide effective magnetic track widths for recording and reproducing heads, so that they are most desirable to obtain a high TPI (tracks per inch) for a magnetic head assembly consisting of a recording head and a reproducing head. SOLUTION: This is a magnetic head assembly consisting of an inductive magnetic recording heads composed of 1, 2, and 3 and an MR reproducing head composed of 4 and 5, and the recording head has a 2nd and a 3rd magnetic gaps not parallel but extending from both ends of the first gap. The effective track width Twweff of the recording head is made larger than the effective track width Twweff of the reproducing head to reduce the S/N drop when the track widths are small in the case of small TPI recording. In this way, high TPI can be realized.
