1,245,757. Cooling reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. 1 Nov., 1968, No. 52020/68. Heading G6C. In a steam-cooled, fast breeder reactor, each vertical fuel pin has an enlarged circumference at an intermediate portion of its length, at the fission zone, so as to cause a greater rate of coolant flow at this zone. The pin 17 is formed of the can 30 containing the fissionable fuel A, plutonium oxide together with the fertile depleted uranium oxide. Depleted uranium oxide occupies the breeding zones B and C. The diameter of the can at A is greater than that at B and C so that the longitudinal velocity flow of coolant at A is greater than at B and C. The space 37 collects gaseous fission products.
