Multi-optical fibres linked to circuit through evanescent field

A multi-guide optical fibre circuit comprises a plurality of optical fibres (1) having access regions (7) formed therein for access to the evanescent field of the fibres (1), these regions being transversely aligned to form a substrate surface and an electro- and/or optical circuit (21, 23) on the substrate surface with access to the evanescent field. Electrodes 25 of variable attenuator 21 and power tap 23 are shown. The invention also includes a method of making such a circuit.
