PROCESS FOR PREPARING ALKANESULFONYL PYRIDINES

A process for preparing alkanesulfonyl pyridines of the formula 1: (see formula I) is disclosed, wherein R1 is unsubstituted (C1-C6)alkyl. The compounds of formula 1 are useful in the preparation of pyridyl-substituted pyrazoles used in the treatment and alleviation of inflammation and other inflammation associated disorders. The process includes (a) reacting a compound of the formula: (see formula II) with a Grignard reagent, and (b) reacting the product of step (a) with an alkyl sulfonylating agent.
