<p>The emergency braking system for a ship consists of a tank holding compressed gas or liquid gas linked by a valve-controlled pipe to an outlet below the waterline at the bows. In an emergency stop the compressed gas is released (8) under the bows, displacing water and causing the hull to lower in the water, thereby increasing hull drag.
