The multi-color lamp for a motor vehicle can be operated with two or more different capacities, preferably one nominal and one reduced, whereby the color in the one differs from that in the other. In one version, the color is white at normal capacity and yellow or orange at quarter capacity. The different characteristics can be implemented by a suitable lamp filament and/or a suitably prepared gas filling and or a suitable layer on the lamp bulb or a cover over it.
