The storage unit, consisting of a pit with a lining (1) and a mobile cage (6) holding the waste bins (12), which are filled through above-ground columns (9), has the cage connected to cables (8a, 8b) that pass round pulleys (4a, 4b) and are attached to counterweights (11). The mobile assembly with empty bins is slightly heavier than the counterweights, providing for a slow descent into the pit. The cage with the full bins is raised for emptying by a battery-powered winch (3) which, because of the counterweights, only has to lift a load equivalent to the weight of the bins' contents.
