The invention relates to a method for starting a multicylinder internal combustion engine which is not provided with camshafts. The admission valves are opened directly after the first TDC has been reached, in order to allow the combustion air to be taken in. The carburation can be further improved during the intake stroke by controlling the valve lift of the admission valves according to the number of revolutions. The starting behaviour of the internal combustion engine can thus be further improved, in general, in relation to other methods.
