PURPOSE: A method for testing a channel is provided to test the quality of the channel which provides a packet-based voice service and offer fault detecting and testing functions about a subscriber terminal. CONSTITUTION: An NMS(Network Management System) requests a POTS(Plane Old Telephone Service) line state test of an IAD to a voice gateway using an SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol) set request message(S100). The voice gateway transmits a response message about a corresponding test request message to the NMS(S101). The voice gateway requests the POTS line state test of the IAD to an SNMP proxy agent(S102). The SNMP proxy agent requests the POTS line state test to the corresponding IAD using the SNMP set request message(S103). An SNMP agent of the IAD transmits a get response message to the SNMP proxy agent of the voice gateway(S104). The SNMP agent of the IAD changes a POTS line state requested in the NMS to a test request and loops a corresponding POTS line(S105). If the voice gateway transmits test pattern data to a corresponding voice path(S106), the IAD returns the corresponding test pattern data to the voice gateway through looping(S107). The corresponding voice gateway analyzes the test pattern and measures the quality of a voice channel(S108). The voice gateway notifies the corresponding quality measurement result to the NMS(S109).
