PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record/reproduce special data while taking compatibility with an existing apparatus. SOLUTION: The special data are recorded in the special data recording area of an optical disk 1 by using a connection bit of eight-to-fourteen (EFM) modulation. The symbol of main data is fixed to a channel bit '01000100000000' (channel bit corresponding to a data bit of '4' of a decimal number) in the special data area. In this case, two kinds of connection bit patterns can be selected. A connection bit selecting circuit 5 selects the connection bit pattern according to the special data. Information on the special data '0' and '1' can be allocated to the connection bit patterns '010' and '100', respectively. The selected connection bit is inputted to an EFM modulation circuit 4, and is recorded on the optical disk 1 by an optical pickup 12 through a recording circuit 9.
