PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which enhances the resolution without increasing the number of picture elements of a linear sensor. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a lens 30 which forms, on a linear sensor 20, the image of a part of a manuscript image on a main scanning line. The lens 30 is mounted on a slider 37 which is free of reciprocation in parallel with the axis in the direction of main scanning, and it can reciprocate so that an optical axis O may shift parallel. Then, the part A and the part B roughly half the manuscript image on the main scanning line are superposed on the linear sensor 20 for formation of an image by shifting this lens 30 in two positions.
