A transmitter S may be a base station of a mobile telephone network and the receiver E1 may be a mobile station or terminal and data packets are transmitted using a time division multiple access frame structure. After every four consecutive time slots, a time phase follows that is reserved for transmissions to further receivers and the time frame contains time slots 0,1,2,3 for transmitting corresponding data packets. If a receiver determines a data packet has been received with errors, it returns a negative acknowledgment and the transmitter sends this packet again. Independent claims are included for a data transmission system, for a transmitter and for a receiver.
