The invention relates to a method for encoding pieces of music. Two different encodings are provided for a group of notes; one for the pitch of the notes and another for the length of the notes. Said encodings are the result of specific compression algorithms performed with respect to pitch and length. The invention is particularly suitable for downloading musical ring tones from a server (10) to a mobile phone (14).
