<p>The present invention involves an air bag deployment chute (12) for deploying an air bag (33) through a panel member (14) having a groove (20). The deployment chute comprises a stationary portion (22) and a door portion (42). The stationary portion includes a base (23) and a peripheral wall (24) integrally connected thereto. The base has a first surface (26) attached to an inner surface (18) of the panel member and an opening (30) to define an inner periphery (32) of the base. The inner periphery defines an open area which is circumscribed by the groove (20) viewed in plan when the deployment chute (12) is attached to the panel member (14). The inner periphery is positioned against the structurally weakened area of the panel member so that the groove is supported by the base to prevent inadvertent pivotal movement of the door portion toward the air bag when force is applied on the outer surface of the panel member.</p> |
