System comprises memory (6) for storage of an initial value of a battery (1) characteristic for different charge and temperature states and for storage of the value of the characteristic as a function of the discharge capacity (in ampere hours) or of the electric energy discharged (watt hours). From the stored initial value and the measured values during operation the residual life can be estimated.
